Just want to introduce myself. My name is John, I just picked up a 2004 GTP. I was modifing the car hours after getting it home. Had the car to lancaster drags a few weeks ago. I could not get it to hook up very good at all. Also have a 72 gto drag car. I race at NYIRP also. |

Hi John, welcome. It usually takes a few trips to the track to get the launch right. Some of us go to NYIRP on a regular basis. We postponed our monthly bracket racing until next Wednesday night, so some of us will be there then.
And there's a picnic scheduled for August at Letchworth state park.

Thanks Larry, the picnic is the same weekend as the Pontiac Nationals in Norwalk, OH otherwise I would go. Maybe I'll come out next Wednesday to NYIRP. I'm usually there on Friday nights and Saturday. This Friday they have a MOM's racing night (mustang on mustang) and they are going to allow brand x cars to compete with them. I think it would be fun to smoke some of the little pony cars at their own event. If anyone comes out on Saturdays stop by my tariler and say Hi. My race car is called Dragon Slayer it is a white gto with flames. I run superpro. |

Welcome! ....and HEY were you at NYI opening day or ever go to Lancaster? I swear I've seen your car....maybe I know you from a friend of a friend.
As for launching your car...you've probably noticed its ALOT different than launching your drag car, esp with no suspension setup, no transbrake, no controllers, no slicks, no....lol.
Its all about "ease-ing" into the gas. First off, Im no pro at it by any means but, I've read alot of different ways that work and I have some experience.
For the street tires, you obv. dont need to bother getting into the waterbox. doing a burnout at all doesnt seem to do much. Just stage deep, leave at the first part of the 3rd yellow (now here some people leave at idle still with one foot on the brake and one on the gas waiting). So, if u idle it up to say 2000rpms and get the light as above. You just let off the brake and let the car go with the pedal where it is, till you **feel like you can give it more gas ultill you're WOT.
**The "feel" is the hardest thing to over come ESP. for you since you have a different beast altogether. If Im not mistaken, Doug on here has a RWD drag car as well. He would probably have the best pointers for launching.
Hope to see u at the track sometime. _________________ ZZP stuff...

Shawn, I have been racing at nyirp for 20+ years and have not missed an opening day yet. I have been getting to lancaster alot more this year.
Part of my traction problem is that the tires are as hard as hockey pucks. they are the factory original michelins (almost bald). I wish the 14 x32's would fit then the car would really hook up. lol

Just play the "dubm guy role". Tell her its a Mom's night, and you "think" its something honoring or whatever mothers.
lol....I doubt it would work but...its be fun to try. |
