I don't suppose anyone happens to have an extra working one in the Buffalo area that I might be able to acquire this weekend?

Looks like it.
I'll buy it off you and trade you picking me up and dropping me off for help with your hood swap. Very Happy

so this isn't good. i took the starter over to Brian, he swapped it in and the engine still doesn't turn over. The starter pinion gear got hung up on the flex plate.

tomorrow he's going to pull the starter and all the plugs and turn the engine by hand. i wonder if there's a bad tooth or something on the flex plate.

If the starter isn't turning, could it be an electrical problem? All grounds reconnected including the ones on the bell housing bolt?

I don't think it's turning because the solenoid never fully engages and completes the circuit to the starter (corrections welcome though).

I turned the motor over (it moved freely with both belts on) and the flexplate appears to be in good shape--no missing teeth, and no cracks that I can see.

The bell housing wires were never touched, and they are secure.

Guzzo found something in the manual about putting shims on the starter mounts to move it away from the motor slightly. I'm going to try that to see if it allows the gears to mesh completely. ...granted if that works, it begs the question, what changed to knock it out of alignment?...

You can get the starter tested at any auto parts store. I don't see how a starter just decides to get out of alignment. Either its not working properly or you have a electrical issue.

I would also think that it would be pretty unlikely that the starter and flexplate gears would get out of alignment, but that seems to be the case here, at least so far.

I put my starter back in, but shimmed it away from the block with some aluminum can pieces (sanded down), and it has better than a 90% start rate so far. Only two of the first three tries failed. The first cleared lock-up itself with the second key turn, and the second jam I resolved by turning the flexplate a little. Has started fine since. Granted I haven't driven anywhere yet, so who knows if that will continue. I'm probably going to space it out a little more (currently 4x depth of an aluminum can wall) before I get adventurous. lol

just replace the starter, this happens all the time. I had to do my starter on both my Black and Bronze GPs. The solonoid could still be good but the bendix on the starter itself likes to not fully engage causing it to not catch properly, just turn your key on and off rapidly and it should catch.
