hey guys finishing up makin an offboard harness so sammy doesnt have to fry any more chevy pcms lol. i used this diagram

question i have is i have a 3 prong illuminated toggle switch with +power, acc., ground prongs but the diagram doesnt show a ground going to the switch so im a bit confused. so far everythings wired up and i have my constant power going to the power prong and the ign pin#19 going to the acc prong is this right? and do i need to ground the remaining ground prong? thanks

The ground is only for the switch illumination, just tap into the ground coming from the power source.

Have you verified that the switch toggles power on and off with a volt meter? If it does then it's good to go.

so just tap into the rest of the ground wires i have? and i havnt tested it yet but is it right that that i got the +constant power prong hooked to the #20 pin on the pcm harness and the #19 ign. pin hooked to the acc. prong on the switch?

alright thanks man i appreciate it.

heres a pic of how it sits right now, just gotta connect the ground from the switch to the ground wire and wrap all the wires in black tape.

WTF is up with the battery clips?
Why not find a 12V 1A wall wart from a laptop computer?

just finished it. all connections are soldered and i redid the black tape and then black taped all the wires. the reason for the battery clips is i didnt feel like buying an adapter, clips were only $3, and technically its not really for me since i dont have to touch anything on my pcm. its for a few of our other buddies who still have some tuning that needs to be done.
adapter is a good idea. i can find one at walmart?

Probably could, or find one from an old computer, printer, scanner, etc.
12V to 14V DC, at least 1 amp.

The only thing about running off a car battery is that if you drop below 11.8V you could end up bricking the PCM. A xformer would be a more reliable power source.

for now ill either hook it to another car thats running or to a car battery with a battery charger hooked up

The whole point of an offboard is to eliminate the voltage fluctuation that a running car or a car battery produce. Hooking it to a car battery or another running car sounds ass backwards to me. Definitely don't use a car charger.

Kinda like tuning a car by plugging into it?

C'mon now guys, there's the cushioned glamorous way of doing car work, or the functional, mobile way that gets things done. I've tapped off my own battery a handful of times to help reprogram a pcm on the road for folks (driveway, etc.). A pcm stays alive until it gets into the 9.x volt range, and PT doesn't talk crap until 11.5, actually warns around 11.6-7 if I recall. If your car battery running an off-board gets drawn below 12 in less than 3-4 minutes it takes for the full read/write with this fast communicating item, you have bigger worries than bricking a $30 pcm.

Of course, a nice wall adapter is a good option for indoor use, as most people only need the harness for 1-2 uses, and may not have a decent battery to rely on for that use. My many uses were for swap purposes for customers and locals with many various oddball cars that wouldn't accept a flash as it interfaced. 99% of tuners don't require this for more than a luxury, so I guess I can see why there's some dissenting methods.

just tested it out tonight and it worked perfect. all our cars have pretty new die hard platinums/or optima redtops so voltage is not a problem. as long as voltage is not fluctuating below 12v with car idling there should be no problems at all.
X2 dezldave lol. powertunr wont bitch until your at 11.5ish. dave actually used his offboard once on my car with my battery and it also worked flawlessly.
the adapter is nice but dont feel like spending the $30 for something that im not really gonna use for myself, i just made it to help the other wbody assclowns around here lol
